Worship
Covenant is a church of loving, caring, intelligent, mentally stimulating people engaged in active service to others. We gather to listen for the work of God and unite in prayer, song and celebration of the sacraments. A children’s sermon is included. We enhance our worship with a dedicated choir that enjoys challenging selections, hand bells, as well as rotating liturgists, greeters and ushers. Church members help plan and participate in special services.
A nursery is provided for children to 3 years. Children 4 to 5 years attend worship and may attend Children’s Church following the children’s sermon. An appropriate worship curriculum is provided for both groups. |

Music
Covenant Presbyterian Church is pleased to make a joyful noise onto the Lord through its exceptional music program.
Covenant’s 24-member Sanctuary Choir is lead by Choir Director Glinda Blackshear, an accomplished singer and an instructor of music at Shelton State Community College. The Sanctuary Choir, backed by an outstanding pipe organ, truly adds to the worship service. The Choir also performs special Cantatas from time to time.

Covenant offers performance venues for musical concerts such as touring college choirs and the Shelton State Music Department. The Shelton Singers, directed by Glinda Blackshear, and the Shelton Brass Ensemble, directed by Alan Blackshear, recently presented a sacred concert at Covenant that included compositions by Alan Blackshear. Mr. Blackshear has now written over a dozen hymn arrangements and original compositions for the Covenant Choir.
Choir practice is Wednesday at 7 p.m., following the Wednesday Night Supper, which is served at 6:30 p.m. |
Children’s Choir
The Covenant Kids Choir is now a combination of kindergarten and elementary-age children who have an informal 30-minute music time on Wednesday evening. The children seem to genuinely enjoy their educational musical experiences. The children occasionally sing for worship services.
Handbell Choir
The Natica Bahar Handbell Choir provides voluntaries for worship on a monthly basis. The choir also accompanies anthems and rings selected hymns and service music over the course of the year. Handbells are also incorporated in processionals. Processionals are rung at Easter and Christmas Eve and for selected Lord’s Day Services.
In the spring the choir acquired three octaves of handchimes and the handbells were recently repaired and refurbished.
Handbell practice is Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Choir Room.
A Musical Heritage
In addition to our organ, handbells and handchimes, other instruments (clarinet, electronic keyboard, flute, guitar, saxophone, trombone, piano and violin) are often incorporated in worship. The greatest use of these instruments was in the quarterly Fourth Sunday Fellowship Services. Instruments were used in the Lord’s Day Services as well.
The choir and congregation join in periodic singing of Psalms. Especially notable are the singing of metrical psalm settings from the Presbyterian Hymnal and spoken texts with sung congregational responses from a variety of sources.
Organ
Covenant Presbyterian Church is proud of its magnificent Casavant Freres organ. The organ is a two-manual, 43-rank instrument with 2,316 pipes. The instrument was revoiced in 2003..
